

Striped bass (Morone saxatilis), often referred to as rockfish, are versatile, opportunistic predators whose diets change across their lifetime. Adult stripers feed on a variety of animals including squid, marine worms, and crabs, as well as smaller baitfish such as menhaden, herring, and shad. When hunting, they frequently employ coordinated strategies to drive schooling prey into tight "bait balls" near the surface before aggressively striking. While striped bass historically supported massive recreational and commercial fisheries along the Atlantic coast, their populations suffered severe declines in the 1970s and 1980s due to overfishing and habitat deterioration, which emphasizes the ongoing need for robust, coast-wide conservation efforts.
Striped bass are anadromous, meaning that they can live in salt or fresh water. They spend the majority of their adult lives in saltwater but must migrate into freshwater rivers to reproduce. In the spring, they embark on a spawning migration to specific freshwater breeding grounds, such as the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware and Hudson Rivers, and the Roanoke River. Following the spawn, they transition into a widespread coastal migration, pushing northward for the summer months—sometimes reaching as far as the Canadian Maritime Provinces—before reversing course to head south in the fall. These seasonal movements are heavily influenced by environmental triggers like water temperature and day length.
